SJAPB also known as St. John’s Alumni Pipe Band, Malaysia was founded in 2005 by an ex-student of St. John’s Institution Cadet Band and has been more than 15 years in the bagpipes industry. The group was originally established as a gathering where friends could come together to exchange knowledge and explore Highland/Scottish music, mainly focusing on the Bagpipes and Drums. The ensemble is primarily composed of two main musical instruments: bagpipes and drums, and its repertoire primarily features Scottish melodies, although it also encompasses a diverse selection of other tunes.
Thereafter, SJAPB continues to grow and venture into contemporary bagpipe tunes and perform for the general public and music enthusiasts. As of date, SJAPB has served more than a hundred shows and events within the region including but not limited to, weddings, corporate launches, birthdays, and TV Shows as well as competing in local Pipes and Drums competitions. The band embraced a Scottish musical style in their performances, as well as in their attire. Uniform use in every event includes kilts, with each member wearing a matching tartan pattern, sporrans, and various accessories such as Glengarries, plaids, belts, and socks.
Since its inception, SJAPB has actively participated in numerous pipe band and solo competitions in Malaysia and various other locations throughout Asia, earning recognition as one of the premier pipe bands in the region.
